About TOPNOTCH MATHS tutoring
________________________________________
All the tutoring is
conducted by CAROL MAYERS
MA (Hons), BSc (Hons), DipTching
Carol Mayers, is a highly qualified teacher.
She has many years experience in
teaching mathematics. She was Head of Mathematics at Kristin School from
1976 to 1987 when she left to take up a lectureship at Auckland College of
Education.
Since 1997 she has been running TopNotch Maths and continued her
involvement in teacher education, running courses for primary and secondary
teachers in Auckland and elsewhere.
Carol has a reputation as a talented
teacher with a highly developed ability to communicate mathematical ideas to
her students. She sets high standards for her students and achieves a high
level of success with them.
The tutoring is individualised. Courses are tailored to meets the
needs of both the group and individuals within the group. Whilst there are
often common problems within a group of students, a vital aspect of the
tutoring lies in addressing areas of difficulty specific to individual
students.
Tutoring occurs in small groups of 3 - 5 students. It is the tutor’s
belief that by providing opportunities for group problem-solving alongside
individualised work, students benefit from the sharing of ideas and
approaches that this facilitates.
Computers are not used in the tuition programmes. The tutor believes
that computers are a valuable aid to learning and motivation, but that at
the senior secondary level a computer-based programme is not appropriate.
Homework is set when deemed necessary. It is designed to reinforce
and maintain work covered in class, so that concepts are consolidated and
revised as the year progresses.
Carol makes herself readily available to parents.
This is so that parents can discuss their son's or daughter’s progress and
ongoing requirements. She also makes contact with parents when she has
concerns about a student’s progress or work habits.
